SYSA FACILITIES COMMITTEE
BLACKBURN PARK ARTIFICIAL TURF FIELD

Shuswap Youth Soccer Association in partnership with The City of Salmon Arm and other local sports organizations are building an Outdoor Artificial Sports Field at Blackburn Park in 2025 and we are looking for your support to complete the project!
The Blackburn Park Artificial Sports Field will extend our current playing season by 3+ months a year. Offering local sports organizations the opportunity to play much earlier in the spring, and later into the fall. It will also be our community’s second field with lights.

How can I support the project?
You can find donation information on our Fundraising Webpage. Or you can reach out to Chad Forman at opsmanager@shuswapsoccer.com if you have any questions or other ways you can support the project.
How much will this project cost?
The total amount of the project is budgeted around $1,135,000. With the The City of Salmon Arm contributing $700,000.
Shuswap Youth Soccer Association Contributing $300,000
SYSA’s Community Fundraiser Contributing $130,000+
Who is managing the Blackburn Park: Artificial Sports Field project?
The Blackburn Park Artificial Sports Field is a City of Salmon Arm project that was awarded through the public tender process. Franklin Engineering has generously donated the design and management of the project as an in-kind contribution to the Shuswap Youth Soccer Association and the community.
When will the multi-sport field be ready for use?
Construction of the synthetic multi-sport field is expected to be completed and ready for sports play by October 2025. The lighting installation will then increase the field’s usability by allowing evening and extended season activities.
Why are lights so important?
Lights are very important to this project, as they greatly extend the usable hours of the field during the Spring, Fall, and Winter months when the grass fields are closed, and daylight hours are limited.
When will the lighting be installed on the field?
Lighting installation will begin once the full fundraising goal of $130,000 has been achieved. Fundraising is ongoing, purchase and installation will start promptly once funds are secured. Stay up-to-date on the fundraising by following along on our Fundraising Page.
What is the size of the field?
82.30m x 57.90m.
Which is the size of a large 9v9 soccer field, or two 7v7 soccer fields. It is over twice the size of our old indoor facility, and over 10 times the size of a high school basketball court.
Who can use this field?
The community! This field is open for bookings to Local Sports Organizations, Community Groups, and the Public for bookings. Just like the grass fields, when the field isn't booked it is available for use by the public.
What sports can use this field?
Soccer, Football, Rugby, Lacrosse, Ultimate, as well as Baseball, Hockey, or any other group who would like to use it for dry-land, fitness training, or other activities.
Will it be replacing an existing grass sports field?
No, it is being built in the unused space of Blackburn Park in-behind the Soccer Fields and Ball Diamonds near 10th AVE SW.
How much longer will the playing season be?
The City of Salmon Arm Grass Fields are open: April 15- October 31 (Weather Dependent)
The Artificial Field will be open: Expected: March 1 until Dec 15 (Weather Dependent) *
Milder winters could extend the playing season through December and into January/February. The field will only be closed when it snows, or when extreme weather prohibits organization’s ability to provide safe activities following Provincial Sport Organization guidelines.
Who will own this field?
This field will be a community asset. It will be owned by the City of Salmon Arm. It will be maintained by the City of Salmon Arm Parks Department, with bookings managed by the Shuswap Recreation Society.
Will Shuswap Youth Soccer Association own or have control of this field?
No, Shuswap Youth Soccer Association believes this project is very important to our community, and has agreed to contribute $300,000 and lead the final fundraising phase of the project, but bookings will be managed by the Shuswap Recreation Society and the field will be available to local sport organizations and residents.
Why not build an indoor sports facility?
This Outdoor Artificial Turf Field has been on the clubs radar for many years, and was the number one priority for the SYSA Facilities Committee. This project was approved by Salmon Arm City Council before the closure of the SASCU Memorial Arena.
With Shuswap Youth Soccer Association already pushing it's financial contribution limit at $300,000, we felt it was vital to our community and membership to continue with our investment in this project to give our community something incredible in the short term. Our $300,000 makes this 1.13 million dollar project possible, but is just a drop in the bucket for a future $5+ Million dollar indoor facility.
An indoor field sport facility in the Shuswap is a project Shuswap Youth Soccer Association is in support of, we just don't have the funds to make it happen at this time.
